some of which are becoming 1. depleted and polluted. Pollution is the build up of any materials or forms of energy inan environment faster than they can be dispersed, broken down, stored or recycled, so that they become 2. detrimental to the lives of the organisms in the environment. The earth has been polluted because of several reasons;the indiscriminate use of pesticides and herbicides have helped to kill insect pests, bacteria, viruses, and fungi, butdespite their good effects on plagues, these chemicals have had poisonous effects that have also spread to birds, fishand a host of other creatures. In addition, the generation and use or transformation of energy are among the worstsources of pollution. Industry uses the greatest proportion of energy, producing dust and gases, heated water and 3. health- endangering materials . Petroleum products burned in internal combustion engines fill the air with toxic substances.

Ecologists think there are some steps that could 4. arrest this attrition . For example, in order to attack insect pests, they can release some sexually sterile forms to prevent their reproduction. Farmers could plant and harvest atstrategic times and regulate irrigation too. In addition, to increase resource and energy recovery from solid wastes, technology in this field must be developed. An example of this would be to separate inert or inorganic waste and put itback into use .Moreover, intensive research efforts to use other sources of energy should be supported. It has beendiscovered that solar cells convert the sun’s rays to electricity. And a plant photosynthesis may be used to producecarbohydrates that could be fermented to provide substitutes for gasoline. Plant enzyme systems could also be usedas sources of energy and water because of their capacity to produce molecular hydrogen. Thus. all of these would helpto 5. stop destroying our environment. Taken and adapted from Biological and health sciences by L. Mclean.
